Blooms May through October with colorful flower heads of red and yellow. Usually 1 1/2 feet tall but can grow to 3 feet tall. The flowers resemble the traditional hats worn in Mexican fiestas, which is where the common name comes from. Deer resistant. Also a source of nectar and valuable  to native bees.
