Meet the Bears: Public Art at Compton Gardens
If you’ve ever strolled the walking trail at Compton Gardens & Arboretum in Bentonville, Arkansas, chances are you’ve spotted a trio of bronze bears lounging near the path. This beloved sculpture, known as Group of Bears, is one of the most photographed and recognized works of public art in Northwest Arkansas — and for good reason.

A Sculpture with a Story
The Group of Bears sculpture has a rich and unexpected history. It was originally sculpted in 1932 by the renowned American artist Paul Manship, best known for his classical style and famous works like the Prometheus statue at Rockefeller Center. These three bears — playful, bold, and full of character — were first carved as individual pieces using live zoo bears as inspiration.
Manship originally designed them to be part of a monumental entrance to the Bronx Zoo, positioned about 20 feet above the ground, which is why their features are more simplified than some of his other intricate works. Although the gateway was never built, the bears lived on.
In 1999, decades after Paul Manship’s passing, his son used the original molds to cast this version of the sculpture in bronze, a durable and commonly used metal for outdoor art. These specific bears now reside proudly at Compton Gardens, nestled among native plants and walking paths.

A cast of this same sculpture also lives in Central Park in New York City — proof that great art belongs in both urban centers and peaceful green spaces.
A Gift from Crystal Bridges

The sculpture was officially installed in the gardens in fall 2008, where it has since become a favorite stop for families, nature lovers, and art enthusiasts alike. Visitors love snapping selfies with the bears — they’ve become a local treasure and a friendly face along the trail.
