The Peels at Play – An Exhibit at Peel Museum and Botanical Garden
The Peel Museum and Botanical Garden in Bentonville, Arkansas, continues to grow as a place where local history comes to life. Known as a beautifully preserved example of Italianate architecture—a style that was popular in Arkansas from the 1840s to 1890s—the museum is home to a rich collection of period pieces and artifacts dating back to the 1800s. And now, one of its most beloved exhibits has found a permanent home.
Originally curated in 2023 as a temporary feature, “The Peels at Play” has become a permanent exhibit at the museum due to its popularity and historical value. Curated by Assistant Museum Manager Lauren Rosenbaum, this exhibit offers visitors a unique window into the everyday lives of the Peel family children.

A Glimpse into Childhood from the 1850s to the 1960s
Housed inside a dedicated display room, “The Peels at Play” features toys and games that belonged to the Peel children across multiple generations. The collection spans more than a century—from the 1850s through the 1960s—and includes both handcrafted and manufactured toys that reflect changing times and tastes.
These treasured items offer insight into the lives of the Peel children who lived in the house between 1875 and 1904, sparking curiosity and nostalgia for visitors of all ages.
The exhibit was made possible through generous donations from the Marquess family and Maurine Peel Towler, descendants of Samuel and Mary Emaline Peel. Their contributions allow museum guests to better understand the personal and playful side of one of Bentonville’s founding families.
