Hundreds of Students Explore Nature Through Hands-On Learning During 2025 Wetland and Woodland Expeditions
Free field trips offered unforgettable outdoor science experiences for 5th and 6th graders across Northwest Arkansas
More than 1,800 students experienced the magic of outdoor science education this spring during the 2025 Wetland and Woodland Expeditions, a free one-day field trip program designed for 5th and 6th grade students. Held at Osage Park Wetlands and the Woodlands of Coler Mountain Bike Preserve, these immersive experiences connected students with local ecosystems through hands-on, curriculum-aligned activities led by knowledgeable community partners.
This year’s program was a resounding success, with 772 students from 10 schools attending the Wetland Expedition and 1,050 students from 6 schools exploring the Woodland Expedition. Students participated in a series of interactive learning stations covering topics such as food chains, weather cycles, conservation, geology, wildlife, and human impact on the environment.
“They LOVED the hands-on experiences, especially throwing mud with seeds into the field and putting on waders to walk into the lake. PERFECT!!”
— Teacher, Ardis Ann Middle School
Each expedition featured 10–11 community-led stations, turning the parks into outdoor classrooms that brought science standards to life in a way that’s difficult to replicate indoors. Activities ranged from exploring aquatic invertebrates in waders to identifying fossils and learning about invasive species management.
“It was a well-organized event with great information and interactive lessons. They loved being able to put on the waders and explore the wetland for organisms. They wanted to go back to that station again at the end!”
— Teacher, ANH Montessori
Students at Coler’s Woodland Expedition investigated creek science, human wellness in nature, and the region’s unique geological features, reinforcing classroom learning in an unforgettable outdoor setting.
“Our students had so much fun and talked about many of the activities they did at various stations all throughout the afternoon. It was a great time! Thank you!”
— Teacher, Kirksey Middle School
Both expeditions emphasized conservation and environmental responsibility, helping students develop a deeper appreciation for the ecosystems in their own backyard.
With strong support from educators and enthusiastic feedback from students, the Wetland and Woodland Expeditions continue to grow as one of the region’s most impactful environmental education programs. The program’s commitment to hands-on, place-based learning ensures students leave with not just knowledge, but a lifelong curiosity and care for the natural world.
