Aprogram from the Peel Compton Foundation and Cognition Coaching

Each session is instructed by Ben Tufford of Cognition Coaching. While often teaching and certifying others to teach MTB skills in the Bike Instructor Certification Program and NICA’s On The Bike skills program, he also contributes to our community by helping riders of all ages and abilities to ride with advanced skills and confidence.

These coaching sessions are limited to 6 riders to ensure every participant gets extensive 1-on-1 professional advice and attention from our certified instructor.

Course Descriptions

This session is for new riders and beginners looking to learn the crucial body position and bike control necessary to ride any mountain bike trail Topics will include Balance and Body Position, Speed Control and Braking, Bike and Body Separation, Shifting, and Intro to Cornering.

This session is for beginners with some experience who are looking to increase confidence on more technical climbs and descents. Topics will include Intermediate Cornering, Three Methods of Climbing, Descending & Descending Dismounts, Ratcheting, Rock Dodge, and Switchback Turns: Up & Down.

This session is for confident beginners and intermediate riders looking to learn technical wheel lifts for navigating bigger trail features. Topics will include Body Position/Balance/Pressure Control, Basic Front/Rear Wheel Lift, Level Lift, Intro to Manuals, and 1/4 Punch Wheel Lift.

This session is for intermediate and up riders who are wanting to push their technical skills into dropping ledges and getting air on the trails. Attending a previous session is strongly encouraged. Students will learn the proper technique to manage drops or ledges of all shapes and sizes with the Cognition Portable Jump Line.

This session is for return jumpers who are ready to start tacking the largest of the MTB Hopper ramps. This clinic will allow riders to increase skills, style, and air time. Pre-requisite of attending the intro to jumps and drops clinic or individual verification from the instructor.

Who is this course for? Youth and Adults who are beginner-intermediate riders looking to increase their confidence and ability. Ages 13+.

What to bring? Weather appropriate active clothing, closed toed shoes, water bottle, a helmet, a face mask, and a mountain bike of any style in good working condition. Additional protective gear recommended but not required.
