Eros and Cupid

Two of mythology’s most widely known archers (arguably) are Eros and Cupid, the Greek and Roman gods of love. These gods are armed with a bow and quiver filled with arrows that cause uncontrollable desire in whoever they strike. Their targets include average people, heroes, and even gods.

It is likely due to their association with the chaotic feelings of love that these archers have remained relevant in cultures across the world since the archaic period!

Odysseus

Any fans of the Iliad and the Odyssey? If you are, chances are you know that archery plays a key role in both infamous works by Homer.

In the Odyssey, Odysseus returns to Ithaca after 20 years away at war. Odysseus assumes a disguise and finds his wife, Penelope, proposing an archery contest for her suitors. To the winner, she offers herself as the prize. To win Penelope’s hand in marriage, competitors were challenged to shoot an arrow through
12 axes using Odysseus’ bow.
