Compton Gardens & Arboretum Renovation

The Peel Compton Foundation will begin the renovation of the Compton Gardens and Arboretum
family home of Dr. Neil Compton to better serve the northwest Arkansas community. The estimated
yearlong project will preserve the historic exterior of the mid-century modern house that was once home to
renowned doctor, photographer, and conservationist Neil Compton.

“The effort will bring the outside in,” notes Debra Layton, Executive Director of the Peel Compton Foundation,
“opening up garden views on the northside of the house and creating a downstairs lounge, ready rooms and
heated outside entertaining spaces to better serve the public.”

The renovation will also redesign the current exhibit room, which is open to the public,
to better tell the story and life of Dr. Neil Compton. The Foundation is working with an arborist and
expert architects to preserve Compton Gardens and Arboretum as a private urban oasis and the house as a
cherished landmark for the Bentonville community with as little disruption as possible.

As part of the renovation, there will be minor disturbances to traffic flow at Compton Gardens & Arboretum.
During construction, the first gravel driveway on the property on N Main Street will become the main one-way
entrance and the exit will remain on NE 3rd Street. Minimal parking will be effected during this yearlong
renovation. The gardens and sidewalks that are not immediately touching the main structure will remain open
to the public. For more detail, please refer to the map below.
